Amusing Animal Adaptations
This lesson has students thinking of "fun" adaptations to use with real animals. Students draw the amusing animal then write about the drawing.
As a whole group, students develop a list of "fun" adaptations, such as pink polka dots and a list of real animals. Die is rolled, once to select an adaptation, another time to select the real animal that will have that adaptation. Students can work alone or with a partner to draw the animal in a habitat where the "fun" adaptation is appropriate. Students then write about their amusing animal. This can be done at one time with the whole class, when work is completed, or in centers. Grouping and modifying criteria can help to differentiate instruction.
