Organization and Development of Living Organisms

This lesson has three procedures. The students will differentiate between living and nonliving things. They will also make observations of living things and their environment by recognizing their basic needs such as air, water, and food.

This resource approaches living/nonliving through picture books (What's Alive by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig,Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming, Wonderful Worms by Linda Glaser, There's A Hair in My Dirt by Gary Larson) for whole class discussions; small group/workstation sorts for living/nonliving, and consider characteristics of living and nonliving with gummy worms and real earthworms. Student assessment sheets are included.
