The Science Spot: Rock and Roll Houses
Click on "Rock and Roll - Building Earthquake Proof Homes". This link provides a few different lessons, but only one or two apply to this specific GLE. Rock and Roll Houses is an inquiry based lesson for students to design "homes" made out of recyclable materials. The teacher creates an earthquake and the students use the information they gathered from the initial "earthquake" to redesign the home for another earthquake. Send home a request for recyclable materials to be used for this lesson. The students may also use materials found within the classroom or school. You can also do a similar lesson with homes built to withstand floods and hurricanes.
