Activities for Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 1
Using a word/letter finder children will identify and differentiate letters and words. This is a beginning of the year Kindergarten activity. Additionally, a lesson from ReadWriteThink, will help children grow as readers and writers using the familiar words and characters of nursery rhymes. Children will be encouraged to connect the characters with letters of the alphabet, letting them serve as hooks to help children remember the letters and their sounds and use that knowledge in their writing. The familiar rhyming patterns can also be used to help students identify familiar chunks of words that they can use in their own writing.
The Reading Foundational standards are directed toward fostering studentsu2019 understanding and working knowledge of concepts of print, the alphabetic principle, and other basic conventions of the English writing system. this lesson addresses the components in Standard 1 which deals with concepts of print and the alphabetic principle.
