Categorizing & Classifying Animals
This lesson is designed to teach English language learners about animal characteristics and classification. Starting with a KWL (What students Know; what they Want to know; what they Learned) While providing several handouts and enrichment activities, it also provides guidance on how to help English language learners acquire the specialized vocabulary that defines those characteristics (such as whiskers, antlers and webbed feet) using visualization, and construct complete sentences that describe them.
While the activities in this resource are written for English Language learners, they are appropriate to all elementary students and would work well in an inclusive classroom to help students acquire a vocabulary of animal characteristics and traits, and understand that these characteristics are adapted to their environment.
