American Rhetoric: The Power of Oratory in the United States
This URL provides a vast bank of speeches featuring presidential addresses, famous movie clips, & the top 100 speeches of all time. The speeches can be listened to by audio and have a pdf transcript option. The site provides a feature entitled "Rhetorical Features in Sound." Teachers can choose specific literary skills and listen to speeches that directly use the term. Definitions are provided with each literary skill.
This resource contains classic and modern speeches that may be used when the standards of speaker's purpose and identifying the thesis & main points of a speech are addressed. Students may listen to various famous speeches and analyze the audio clip for the speaker's purpose to inform, persuade, and entertain. Students may analyze the organizational structure of a speech. The "Rhetorical Features in Sound" may be used when teaching certain literary elements. Definitions of each term are given, and a sound clip from a speech will feature the term being discussed. The Rhetoric Quiz under "Cool Exercises" could be used as a pre-assessment to see what students already know or as a summative assessment at the end of a speech unit. The movie clips are naturally a great motivator for students.
