Life has a history
This slide show includes photos of animals and plants alive today, and of fossils. When selecting a "level," choose level 1 for K-4 students. The teachers' pages, worksheets, etc. are all for older students. At Level 1, the authors recommend showing the slideshow as a whole-group activity, though an advanced student might enjoy using it alone or with a partner.
The slide show and accompanying commentary invite students to share their observations about what the fossils show us about the animal or plant that became fossilized. There are also slides that invite students to observe shared characteristics of a human family, and a family of cats.
