Suggestions for Pairing Contemporary Music and Canonical Literature. Author: Dr. Freddie A. Bowles and Ebenezer Baldwin Bowles.
This is a long, detailed list of songs that may correspond with famous pieces of literature, many of which are taught in high school English courses. Songs generally include thematic connections. Many pieces of literature contain more than one song.
This list can be used in indefinite ways, including incorporation of media, emphasis of literary devices including themes or character traits, or for identifying common themes in two different types of writing. Teachers may use songs to introduce literature, as a capstone, or as a way to segue different aspects of the unit, if multiple songs exist.
