Dirtmeister's Science Lab: Matter
The Dirtmeister provides plenty of resources for experimenting with science. His main goal is to make learning about science fun, and in this example, he uses a mixture of cornstarch and water to explore properties of matter. This is perfect for teaching students the difference between liquid and solid, and what happens when they are combined. There is also a resource available on the site for teachers.
In this experiment, students are encouraged to document the properties they see of the mixture they make (though I would also encourage students to do the same for the two ingredients before the mixture is created). When the matter is stationary, it contains all the properties of a liquid. When it is in motion (mechanical energy, in this case, caused by squeezing the matter through fingers), however, it has all the properties of a solid.
