Build a Family Tree
This online activity is a game that invites students to create a family tree using paternal information from the Y chromosome. At the start of the game, students are given an incomplete family tree of male relatives. Simulated DNA sequences from the Y chromosomes of 10 fictitious individuals are given, and students must place them on the tree in the correct order based on their DNA similarities on the Y chromosome. Mutations are discussed, and current research on the Y Chromosome is provided.
Students must understand that genetic material is inherited and passed from generation to generation. Students must understand DNA and how to compare one strand to another.
