Online Onion Root Tip Activity
Students analyze images of cells during the cell cycle and identify the stage of the cell cycle they represent. Students then graph their findings and draw the conclusion that cells spend most of their time in Interphase where they are growing.
Students will relate this information to the need for cells to divide once they grow to a size that causes the surface area to volume ratio to hinder cell transport. Cells spend most of the time growing, and a smaller amount of time undergoing the process of cell division.
