Presidential Popularity
This assessment centers around an article that claims a popularity increase has occurred for President Clinton. The margin of error and the beginning and ending popularity percentages it references lead to a relevant discussion about whether it is a reasonable claim. It follows with a request for the student to write a letter to the editor explaining why the assertion may be regarded as questionable or misleading.
This activity is useful for integrating math with the ELA needs for writing practice. It could be used as a pre-assessment hook for the beginning of a lesson and/or as a summative assessment.
