SOAPSTone: A Strategy for Reading and Writing
Found on AP Central as a Pre-AP strategy, SOAPSTone employs six steps for comprehending a text: speaker, occassion, audience, purpose, subject, and tone. Students complete the steps in order by writing down their ideas. Their results are then used to generate discussion or to create a written analysis of the work.
As a Pre-AP strategy, SOAPSTone is tailored to help honors and advanced students approach a difficult text, but the strategy could also be modified for students of all levels. It can be used for literary works or informational passages and establishes a close reading of the text needed for discussion and writing.
