Reading Rockets: Sentence Combining
This website includes a strategy that will help students learn to vary sentence structure and syntactic order.
Combining sentences encourages a writer to take two or more short, choppy sentences and combine them into one effective sentence. By learning this skill, students enhance their writing style. Sentence combining skills will develop over several short practice sessions and should be considered as one component of an overall writing program. This strategy allows students options for syntactic variety and varied sentence structure. Examples, literature extensions, and research supporting this strategy are provided.
