Changing Sounds
This interactive site allows students to discover what conditions affect pitch and volume. A guitar, drum, and bottle is manipulated to show different conditions that affect pitch. After manipulating these objects, students sort sounds from recorders according to pitch and volume. A quiz is included that allows students and teachers to assess understanding.
This interactive site can be used with a whole class at the beginning of a unit of study to help students begin to understand pitch and discriminate between different pitches. It can also be revisited individually throughout a unit of study to enhance understanding of what affects pitch. As students use the site, it might be useful for them to record the conditions (drum skin, loose or tight)as they are manipulating and the resulting pitch.
