The Authentic History Center: Primary Sources from American Popular Culture
The Authentic History Center is comprised of artifacts and sounds from American popular culture. It was created to teach that everyday objects in society have authentic historical value and reflect the social consciousness of the era that produced them. Authentic also means conforming to fact, and therefore worthy of trust, reliance, or belief. The collection is organized chronologically from 1600-2010.
Students can access this site by historical time period (Jazz Age) or by event (Watergate Scandal) to critique a speech, a radio or television broadcast, etc. Teachers will be able to select primary sources to complement time periods in American literature. Speaking and listening skills will be utilized the analyze and critique the information presented orally by others.
