Vocabulary Strategies and Direct Teaching
This website has a bank of instructional strategies, usable documents, and samples. The top of the page provides research about vocabulary instruction. The second section features a chart outlining how vocabulary is learned. Some of the strategies in this section have a link—others can be independently searched by key word. The third section has a collection of graphic organizers that can be viewed and saved in Microsoft Word. The last section provides information about word walls and photographs of effective word walls. Most of the ideas and material are from the researched based professional development program, Learning Focused.
These vocabulary strategies can be used across subject areas and grade levels. Most of the strategies should be used in contextu2014not as an isolated activity. Research supports cross content exposure to vocabulary and direct teaching of skills to help students independently infer meaning in context.
