Teaching Nonfiction Books in AP English Language
The AP Language and Composition class is often taught in the eleventh grade. Ample opportunities exist for students to study fiction in ninth, tenth, and twelfth grades, and especially in AP English Literature. Nonfiction is the genre with which students -- and teachers -- have the least amount of experience and which students will encounter as they transition to
higher education and careers. It is imperative that teachers include some nonfiction selections in the English Language Arts
curriculum. Suggested methods of including nonfiction are discussed on this web site.
Specific suggestions for including nonfiction are discussed: 1) Supplementing the Study of a Text, 2) Encouraging Independent Reading and Thinking, 3) Choosing a Personal Favorite for Classroom Study, 4) Offering Students a Break from Analytical Writing, 5) Preparing Students for the AP Synthesis Essay.
