Literary Genres: A List
An extensive list of literary genres complete with definitions and examples. Organized by fiction (fairy tales, fantasy, folk tales, tall tales, fables, adventure, mystery, historical, realistic, and science fiction), nonfiction (informational, biography, autobiography), and poetry (free verse, haiku, ballads, etc.)
This list is intended to be a content resource for teachers. While it is not a complete list (does not include essay or drama, for example), it provides several examples of fiction, nonfiction and poetry with a list of books a teacher might show students, read to/with students, or include in a classroom library. The information in the PDF could be presented to students as is or in a more accessible format, such as PowerPoint, for students to take notes.
