Support for Academic Discussions
This site offers features of academic discussions. It includes structure for discussions, a classroom observation tool, reflection questions about student engagement, the idea wave for structured discussions, and language strategies for active classroom participation.
Usable sentence stems for class discussions begin on page 7 titled: Language Strategies for Active Classroom Participation. In this section students use sentence starters that help them paraphrase, express an opinion, ask for clarification, predict, solicit a response, ask for ideas, affirm and acknowledge ideas, as well as rules for formal and written English. Some of these could be reformatted and made accessible for students to reference when having academic discussions.
