Bill Nye on Phases of Matter (Part 1)
In this video, Bill Nye reviews the three phases of matter, discusses the adding or subtracting heat energy. Two kids then demonstrate a simple experiment with ice cube and a skillet. Nye also demonstrates how molecules move slower or faster with the addition or subtraction of heat energy using several examples of experiments.
This 9-minute long video can be used as a springboard for students to begin thinking about how to design an experiment by adding or subtracting heat energy. Consider using this as the beginning of a series of lessons using other resources in this GLE. Students can view the video, watch a teacher-demonstrated experiment, participate in a group experiment, discuss other ideas for experiments, and then design their own experiments.
