Fraction Game
This is a game for single or two players that allows the user to practice using equivalent fractions and adding proper fractions. The game board contains 7 number lines divided into different fractional parts. The object of the game is to get all of the markers to the right side of the game board, using as few cards as possible. The cards contain the fraction that the student will be targeting. The student then moves the markers so that the sum of the moves is a fraction that is less than or equal to the target fraction. For example, if the first card turned over is 4/5, you could move the fifths marker to 3/5 and the tenths marker to 2/10, because 3/5 + 2/10 = 3/5 + 1/5 = 4/5.
This game requires the students to use knowledge involving equivalent fractions in order to add them and progress in the game. This is an advanced activity that requires a deep understanding of equivalent fractions and could be used as a filler or enrichment activity. This game could also be played using a model of fraction bars on paper that the students color. One could make cards or use number cubes to designate the target fraction. This activity can also be used as an assessment.
