Key 1: Finding a Topic
This PDF describes the process of finding a topic by having students consider these four points:
1. Which Topics Work (and Which Ones Don’t)
2. The Right Topic for You
3. Narrow Your Topic
Teachers can refer to this resource to help them describe the process of identifying and narrowing a topic using kid friendly terms. Various strategies are offered that are appropriate for developing writers. Models are provided to reinforce the descriptions of the strategies. This resource could be used during whole group or small group instruction. It could be added to a writer's notebook as a reference tool for individual use.
