Frogs on a Log

Students learn their first basic addition facts as they make the connection between counting and finding one more than a number. Students will manipulate frogs on a number line to represent adding 1 to a number. Lesson plan with manipulative and involving students.  Students will learn the addition facts to five.

Extensions:

  • As an extension, let students hop on the number line (log) at a given number and jump one space or two spaces as they count on. An example of this would be to have the student hop on Number 4 and jump one space, two spaces as the count,  5,  6.
  • Enrichment to this lesson would be to allow students to duplicate the activity using word problems such as: Three frogs are on the log. Two more frogs joined them. How many in all?
  • Using a variety of word problems allow students to manipulate the frogs and write number sentence.
