Teaching Lord of the Flies with The New York Times. Author: Holly Oljavo and Shannon Doyne, The New York Times.

The New York Times Learning Network compiled a vast amount of resources on popular novels. This resource contains lesson plans to teach with Lord of the Flies, related topics, archived articles with references to Lord of the Flies or William Golding, and NY Times articles with a thematic relationship to the novel (e.g. "Why Did They Do It" [youth violence], "A Bully's Future, From Hard Life to Hard Time", "The Animal Cruelty Syndrome").  These resources can be used in teaching or discussing the story, or in incorporating related nonfiction into the novel unit. Some lesson are more appropriate for government class, but can be modified for literature classes. This resource can be used for teaching lessons contained on this site or to incorporate quality nonfiction into a Lord of the Flies novel unit.  The lessons contain interesting discussion topics and can be modified for students of any level.
