Grammar Basics: Metaphors
This Sophia packet provides an overview of metaphors, types of metaphors (common/conventional, implied, extended and dead) and how they compare to similes and figures of speech. Included in this packet are an explanatory slideshow, a pair of videos demonstrating the differences between metaphor and simile and their use in song. This learning packet provides a simple introduction to figurative language and metaphors, with a starting point of song. To further address or assess the Common Core standard for figurative language and to delve particularly into the meaning of extended metaphors, this lesson should be accompanied or followed up with examples in literature in a variety of historical and cultural contexts.
