Graphing Genes and Proteins: A real data set

The students will experience working with a dataset currently used for research. This lesson focuses on the main components of tables and graphs and how to build a scientific scatter plot in Microsoft Excel. This graph shows gene expression on the x axis (labeled mRNA mean) and protein abundance on the y axis. Also, this activity aims to have group discussion on how to “read” results from graphs and to relate them to its source. Many biology teachers struggle finding opportunities for students to work with data and graph biological functions. This is a graph based activity that shows the relationship between DNA, RNA and protein production. This activity will help students develop analytical skills needed for success on ACT and in life.
