Reading between the Lines
Into the Book is a reading comprehension resource for K-4 students and teachers. The website focuses on eight research-based strategies: Using Prior Knowledge, Making Connections, Questioning, Visualizing, Inferring, Summarizing, Evaluating and Synthesizing. Online interactive activities are available for use, and engaging 15-minute video programs can be viewed. Into the Books Reading Between the Lines Activity is a lesson designed to help readers infer the implicit meaning of text. The lesson requires the teacher to think aloud as he/she reads a passage to the class. The teacher pauses during the reading and demonstrates how prior knowledge aids in making logical inferences. As students gain confidence, the teacher can prompt them to make inferences about the text. The lesson provides the teacher higher order thinking questions to prompt the students.
