Speed and Velocity Activities for Middle School Students

Middle school students are often familiar with the concept of speed from their everyday lives. At the same time, they might be confused about how to calculate speed, or how it differs from velocity. Knowing that velocity is simply speed in a specific direction can help them grasp this concept, and using speed and velocity activities can help reinforce it. Activities include "The Speed Olympics," "On the Way to School," and "Find Your Way on a Map."  Directions are given for these activities along with suggestions for assessment. Can be used as instruction, formative assessment, and differentiation. Hands on practice.

Helpful Hints

There are three activities in this lesson and each lesson requires different materials. Depending on the lessons like The Speed Olympics, it might be best to do have balls, jump ropes, etc. around to use. During On The Way To School, make sure students have stop watchs or something to keep time and a map of the city for late calculations. For Find Your Way on a Map, make sure to have different maps handy.
