WritingFix: An Alphabet Book Research Project

This writing across the curriculum lesson uses the steps of the writing process in conjunction with research to provide a culminating activity for any cross-curricular unit of study. This cross-curricular writing lesson provides a six step writing process that guides students through research, writing, and publication. As a cross-curricular unit is introduced through read-aloud, students listen for what they believe are key words that might be important during their study. Those key words are then added to the class alphabet chart, hopefully filling up all or most letters spots. Those words now become an anticipation guide around which to focus the research. Students choose one letter or key word upon which they would like to become the class expert. That key word becomes the student's research topic and the subject of their letter page for the class alphabet book. This lesson includes rubrics for students to self-assess or partner conference about organization and idea development.
