Academic standards list

Grade 7 — Tennessee Physical Education Standards

Introduction

Academic standards define the expectations for knowledge and skills that students are to learn in a subject by a certain age or at the end of a school grade level. This page contains a list of standards for a specific content area, grade level, and/or course. The list of standards may be structured using categories and sub-categories.

Motor Skills

Motor Skills
      Invasion Games/Throwing
Using a mature overhand pattern, throws to a partner at varying distances.
 
      Invasion Games/Catching
Using a mature pattern, catches at different levels and extensions with passive defense.
 
      Invasion/Receiving
Passes/receives with hands/feet/implement while passing against a defender (small group).
 
      Invasion Games/Passing and Receiving
Passes and receives utilizing various pathways with a single defender (small group).
 
      Invasion Games/Offensive Skills
With defensive pressure, performs offensive skills (pivots, fakes, change of direction, and give and go) to create open space.
 
      Invasion Games/Sports- Ball Control
Demonstrates dominate and non-dominant side (hand or foot) dribble while changing directions.
 
      Invasion Games/Sports- Ball Control
Dribbles and passes a ball with foot or implement using both inside and outside of foot or implement with a defender.
 
      Invasion Games/Sports- Shooting on Goal
Shoots on goal with appropriate force and accuracy with a defender.
 
      Invasion Games/Sports- Defensive Skills
Performs a defensive slide without crossing feet
 
      Games/Sports- Serving (Net/Wall)
Performs a serve (underhand/overhand) with a mature pattern to a predetermined target.
 
      Games/Sports- Striking (Net/Wall)
Strikes with an overhand pattern with appropriate distance and force during challenge activities.
 
      Games/Sports- Forehand/ Backhand
Using either a short or long handled implement successfully rallies with a partner.
 
      Net/Wall Games/Sports- Volley
Executes a forearm volley with accuracy.
 
      Game/Sports- Target (Striking)
Strikes a stationary object with an implement with accuracy from varying distances.
 
      Games/Sports- Field (Strike)
Strikes a pitched ball with an implement with force and accuracy.
 
      Games/Sports- Field (Fielding)
Catch (field) an object from different directions and force.
 
Fitness
      Fitness (types of activities)
Participates in a variety of strength and endurance activities (weight training, resistance training, free-weights).
 
      Fitness (intensity)
Participates in moderate to vigorous strengthening activities.
 
      Fitness (flexibility)
Uses correct techniques for dynamic stretching to improve flexibility.
 
Rhythm, Dance, & Educational Gymnastics
      Rhythms & Dance
Demonstrates proper sequence of a dance with at least 32 counts in 2 or more dances.
 
Performs a partner dance to varying tempos.
 
      Educational Gymnastics
Creates and demonstrates an educational gymnastics routine with at least 4 elements.
 
Aquatics (Optional)
      Aquatics
Demonstrates basic floating technique (front and back) and treading water.
 
Outdoor Pursuits (Optional)
      Outdoor Pursuits
Demonstrates correct technique for basic skills in 2 selected outdoor activities (e.g., Rock Climbing, Orienteering, Hiking, Biking, Ropes Course).

Evaluates a peer's performance using the critical elements.
 
Uses a teacher generated checklist to evaluate a peer's skill performance in a game situation.
 
Tactics and Strategies
      Games/Sports- Creating Space
Creates open space by staying spread on offense.
 
      Games/Sports- Reducing Space
Executes the correct defensive position and movement based on the situation.
 
      Games/Sports- Denial
When appropriate, denies the pass or catch to work toward deflection.
 
      Games/Sports- Transition
Successfully transitions quickly from offense/defense and defense/offense while communicating with team mates and maintaining proper spacing.
 
      Games/Sports- Tactics/Shots
Executes appropriate shots to open space based on opponents location.
 
      Games/Sports- Shot Selection
Controls speed and/or trajectory of the shot based on the location of the target or opponent.
 
      Games/Sports- Offensive Strategies
Explains intended location and provides a description of shot selection (lob, high arc, line drive).
 
Outdoor Pursuits (Optional)
      Outdoor Pursuits- Movement Concepts
Analyzes and makes adjustments based on variables (e.g., skill, fitness, conditions, equipment).
 

Fitness & Physical Activity

Defines the importance of daily physical activity.
 
Fitness Knowledge
      Fitness Knowledge
Differentiates between health related (cardiovascular; muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, flexibility) and skill related fitness.
 
Interprets the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale as it relates to intensity.
 
Explains how the FITT principle relates to fitness and physical activity.
 
Identifies the major muscles used in selected physical activity.
 
Assessment & Planning

Designs a plan to improve one health-related component based on the results of fitness log and fitness test data.
