Grade 5 — Tennessee Physical Education Standards

Introduction

Academic standards define the expectations for knowledge and skills that students are to learn in a subject by a certain age or at the end of a school grade level. This page contains a list of standards for a specific content area, grade level, and/or course. The list of standards may be structured using categories and sub-categories.

Motor Skills

Locomotor
      Hop (one foot), gallop, slide, skip
Combines traveling with manipulative skills.
 
      Jog, run
Uses appropriate pacing to run a variety of distances.
 
      Jump & land for distance (horizontal)
Applies jumping and landing to a variety of activities
 
      Jump & land for height (vertical)
Applies jumping and landing to a variety of activities
 
Dance/Rhythmic Activities
      Dance
Creates and performs dances on beat with correct pattern.
 
Nonlocomotor or Educational Gymnastics
      Balance
Designs and performs a balance sequence with varying bases of support, body shapes, and levels.
 
      Weight Transfer & Rolling (OPTIONAL)
Transfers weight from feet to hands using body extensions
 
      Combinations (OPTIONAL)
Combines traveling, balance, weight transfers/rolls, and movement concepts to create and perform an individual or partner educational gymnastics sequence.
 
Manipulative Skills
      Underhand Throw
Applies underhand throwing to a variety of partner or small-sided games/practice tasks.
 
      Overhand Throw
Throws overhand using a mature pattern.
 
      Catching
Applies catching on the move to a variety of partner or smallsided games/practice tasks.
 
      Passing & Receiving with implements
Passing and receiving with a partner while on the move.
 
      Dribbling with hands
Combnes dribbling and passing skills.
 
      Dribbling with feet
Combines dribbling with feet and passing skills.
 
      Kicking (force or distance)
Punts a ball using a mature pattern.
 
Applies kicking to smallsided games/practice tasks.
 
      Passing & Receiving with feet
Combine passing and receiving the ball with foot dribbling.
 
      Striking with hand(s)
Overhead volleys a ball using a mature pattern.
 
      Striking, short implement
Consecutively strikes a ball with a short-handled implement against a wall using a mature forehand pattern.
 
      Striking, long implement
Demonstrates a mature pattern using a longhandled implement.
 
      Jumping Rope
Creates and performs a jump rope routine with a partner using a short or long rope.

      Movement Principles (base of support, muscle tension, ready position)
Analyzes and self-corrects movement principles.
 
Applies movement principles in a variety of smallsided games/practice tasks.
