Academic standards list

Grade 3 — Tennessee Physical Education Standards

Introduction

Academic standards define the expectations for knowledge and skills that students are to learn in a subject by a certain age or at the end of a school grade level. This page contains a list of standards for a specific content area, grade level, and/or course. The list of standards may be structured using categories and sub-categories.

Motor Skills

TSS.PE.K-5
 
Locomotor
      Hop (one foot), gallop, slide, skip
Combines at least two locomotor skills with smooth transition.
 
      Jog, run
Travels showing differentiation of speeds
 
      Jump & land for distance (horizontal)
Leaps using a mature pattern.
 
Jumps and lands using a mature pattern of one and two foot takeoffs and landings
 
      Jump & land for height (vertical)
Jumps using a mature pattern.
 
Dance/Rhythmic Activities
      Dance
Performs a simple teacherand/or studentdesigned rhythmic activity.
 
Nonlocomotor or Educational Gymnastics
      Balance
Maintains stillness on various bases of support demonstrating muscular tension and extensions of free body parts.
 
Balances in an inverted position with stillness and supportive base.
 
      Weight Transfer & Rolling (OPTIONAL)
Transfers weight from feet to hands for momentary weight support.
 
Rolls forward and sideways using tight muscles and proper body alignment.
 
      Combinations (OPTIONAL)
Performs a 3-part sequence of balance-weight transfer/rollbalance.
 
Manipulative Skills
      Underhand Throw
Rolls a ball using a mature pattern.
 
Throws underhand to a partner or target with appropriate force.
 
      Overhand Throw
Throws overhand for distance or force demonstrating side to target, arm back, and stepping with opposition.
 
      Catching
Catches overhand (at or above chest) using a mature pattern (from partner).
 
      Passing & Receiving with implements
Passing and receiving with a partner while stationary with appropriate force.
 
      Dribbling with hands
Dribbles with preferred hand while jogging with control of the ball and body.
 
      Dribbling with feet
Dribbles with feet while jogging, keeping control of the ball and body.
 
      Kicking (force or distance)
Kicks a ball at intended levels with a running approach.
 
      Passing & Receiving with feet
Passes and receives a ball with the insides of the feet to a stationary partner, "giving" on reception.
 
      Striking with hand(s)
Strikes an object with underhand or sidearm pattern over a net/line, to the wall, or to a partner.
 
      Striking, short implement
Strikes an object with a shorthandled implement sending it forward using an underhand pattern with accuracy.
 
      Striking, long implement
Strikes an object with a longhandled implement sending it forward and using proper grip.
 
      Jumping Rope
Performsintermediate jump rope skills for both short and long ropes.
 
Turns a long rope correctly.

Recognizes the concept of open space.
 
Applies the concept of open space while moving.
 
      Space Awareness (pathways, levels, directions
Recognizes clockwise and counterclockwise directions.
 
Combines levels, directions, and pathways into simple travel, dance, and gymnastic sequences.
 
      Effort: speed and force
Recognizes the need for varied speeds and forces within movement.
 
Applies speeds or forces with throwing and kicking.
 
      Relationships (body shapes, with objects, with people)
Differentiates relationships with people (mirror/ matching, reading/following).
 
Demonstrates relationships with people (mirror/ matching, reading/following).
 
      Movement Principles (base of support, muscle tension, ready position)
Recognizes the need for ready position.
 
Applies concept of ready position to increase stability and prepare for movement.
 
Analysis & Strategies
      Performance Cues
Identifies errors of a skill.
 
      Simple Strategies
Recognizes a variety of simple strategies in gamelike activities.
